How do I prepare my child for
Photo Day?
Easy-Peasy!
For kindergartens that do not have compulsory school uniforms, parents often ask us what should their child wear on Photo Day? Here are five simple tips that might help:
Tip #1
Don’t dress your child in anything they don’t like.
When children wear clothes that they are uncomfortable in, their discomfort shows in their photos, especially if the fabric is stiff and scratchy, or there is a tag itching at the collar. They will often pull and tug away at their clothes, instead of being engaged and relaxed.
Tip #2
Dress for the weather.
Once again, comfort is key. If it’s freezing outside, make sure your child has a warm jacket they can put on when playing outside. Conversely, if the forecast is set for a hot day – make sure they’re not dressed in overly warm clothing. Melbourne weather is often unpredictable, so layers are best!
NOTE: Children have fun no matter what the weather conditions, so they might get messy, muddy or wet during play. Remember to pack them a spare set of clothes just in case!
Tip #3
Choose soft, comfortable fabrics.
Clothes made from soft fabrics such as cotton, tend to be (and look) more comfortable. When choosing your children’s outfits, ask them to sit on the floor with their legs crossed and check to see if their clothes bunch up in an unflattering way.
Also, pay attention whether any part of the clothing restricts their movements. Also, try to avoid dressing your child in a short skirt or dress as they have a tendency to ride up.
Tip #4
Try to avoid graphics or logos.
As a general rule, it is best to avoid clothing with graphics or logos as they often distract away from the subject. Patterns such as plaids, stripes and florals are a better option. You can even mix-and-match them. Also don’t be afraid to layer them with solid colours & demins.
However if your child is obsessed with a favourite Paw Patrol t-shirt, then perhaps this is what they should wear. It’s more important that we try preserve your child’s memory of their kindergarten days, than be too overly concerned with the clothes they are wearing.
Tip #5
Hairstyles matter.
Here are some tips to keep your child’s hair out of their faces and in for longer:
Hairstyles using braids and rubber-hair-bands tend to stay neater for longer.
Headbands (the semi-circle wire type) often fall out of place when your child is jumping, unless they’re a tight fit.
Good quality, firm bobby-pins tend to do a better job at keeping fine hair in place than hair-clips.
